Here’s an author interview with Shiralyn J. Lee.
Take it away, Shiralyn…
- How did you start writing erotica?
I began writing erotica because for the genre and type of stories that I wrte it seemd I would end up with a few blank spaces on my pages.
- What’s your favourite published work of yours and why?
My favourite published work is Pink Crush. Trust me the title isn’t about a fluffy romance, quite the opposite. I write lesbian erotica and this story line introduces Danny a female firefighter in London and she has some tough cookie decisions to make.
- What erotic authors do you enjoy reading?
I enjoy Pat Califia. Mainly because she is not afraid to write down even the smuttiest words. I’ve been known to blush a few times.
- Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Most of my story lines come from my own experiences. I have induced that with actual historic events with some of my books. I love to research and lately I have found myself getting involved in the 1800’s era.
- Do you have any unusual writing rituals?
I write constantly when I’m at home. I have no idea what a social life is anymore.
- Where’s your favourite place to write?
I write sitting on my sofa with a small table in front of me and the T.V on. Yes it’s a distraction but I love my programmes.
- Who is your favourite character from one of your stories and why?
My favourite character has to be Sally McGuire from the Submissive Scullery Maid. She is a cute Irish gal growing up in Dublin, Ireland and finding herself working and living in London. Again this is in the 1800’s.
- Do your nearest and dearest know what you do, and if so, what was their reaction when they found out?
My family and friends all know what I write, my mother is banned from most of my books but hey someone’s gotta write it 🙂 Most of them are happy for me.
- What was your ideal career when you were a child?
When I was a child…I used to tell people that I was going to marry someone rich. Nuff said there LOL
- How do you get yourself in the mood to write?
I’m always in the mood to write. When I sleep I dream about it, when I work I fantasise about it. I can’t stop right now.
- What’s the best writing tip you’ve ever been given?
The best writers tip I’ve been given is keep writing the scene, if it doesn’t work then walk away from it and take another look after you’ve eaten. And if anyone out there is like me, I always forget to eat.
- If you get writer’s block when you’re writing, how do you get around it?
I had writers block for about 2 weeks once. It wasn’t during a story but more like what can I make the story about. Once I came up with my idea I just went for it.
- If you could bring one of your characters to life, which one would it be and why?
I would bring Danny Cooper alive if I could. She is a strong female character looking for her soulmate. But whilst she’s looking we could have a few bevvies down at the local.
- What’s your favourite genre within erotica and why?
My favourite genre within erotica is and always will be lesbian. There is so much drama involved in the lesbian community.
- What are you working on at the moment?
I am currently working on an 1800’s story. I can’t say too much about it but I am excited about this one.
- What’s your biggest writing acheivement?
My biggest writing achievement is my book Pink Crush. In the lesbian community, Sarah Waters is huge. She wrote Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith. Well I knocked her off the UK number one spot for 4 days at the beginning of January this year. Yes I felt smug, my heart pounded so hard.
