Laura Meets Jeffrey is marketed as a real life Fifty Shades of Grey. Laura Bradley meets Jeffrey Michelson when she’s working in an upscale New York City brothel in 1980. They quickly go from prostitute and client to having a relationship. Laura continues to turn tricks for money, as it’s damn good money she needs, plus she really enjoys her job-she loves sex and getting paid for it is a huge added bonus.
Jeffrey is an ad designer, and together, he and Laura spend the eighties taking full advantage of the sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle. Prostitution, swinging, glory holes and orgies are the name of the game-before sexually transmitted diseases, particularly AIDS, put paid to that lifestyle.
In private, though, their sex life is still wild and thrilling. Laura has a penchant for being hurt-and Jeffrey eagerly steps into that role. However, it gets to the stage where it’s not enough for Laura, and their sexual exploits become more and more extreme.
Along the way, Jeffrey is discovered by John Lennon, and works for him and Yoko, Apple Records and the Rolling Stones. Other notable things he does is create Puritan, the world’s largest-selling explicit sex magazine, and box with Ryan O’Neal and Jose Torres.
I found this book to be a really interesting insight into 1980s New York and America, orgies, S&M, sex addiction and more. It is a memoir, so it’s written (presumably) from truth, as opposed to simply trying to titillate the reader. As a result, it’s only going to be erotic if the things written about are your thing.
There was just so much going on that I had to keep taking breaks from reading the book. I also had no idea who many of the famous people mentioned were, but I don’t think that really made much difference. Overall, this was a fascinating and educational read about the era.
