How sexy is the Cosa Nostra?
Short answer: plenty. Slightly longer answer: At least in a fantasy, it is.
When I wrote Dark Soul, an erotic series about a mafia boss and a killer, I first had to step away from the real world mafia (Cosa Nostra being their American branch) – if you’ve watched Goodfellas or a more realistic depiction of the mafia, you’ll know that those guys are screw-ups and the best we can hope is that we’ll never get to meet them in real life. There’s nothing to glorify about organized crime in the real world.
Yet, while we wouldn’t want to get pushed around by a bad boy in real life, the realm of fantasy is entirely different. And there’s plenty about the mafia that can get a fantasy rolling. There’s the repressed homoerotic undertone of men sharing secrets and women staying pretty much on the outside.
Crime, danger, weapons, lots of money and easy drugs make for a heady cocktail; there’s the sense of honor and the strict mutual control. A made man, a member of the Mafia, has rules to follow, and if he doesn’t, he gets killed. Of course, even following the rules doesn’t guarantee a long life. It’s a dog-eat-dog world, and one of the worst sins any of them can commit is to be gay or bisexual or be suspected of it. The danger of discovery spices every encounter up. With such a knife blade to the throat, testosterone raging, life is both precious and cheap, and so is sex.
And there’s another thing that attracted me and fascinated me while writing Dark Soul: all the characters are making their own rules. Stefano, the mafia boss, is bending the rules of his family by pursuing his attraction to Silvio Spadaro, and Silvio is so hedonistic and so self-assured that it looks like a miracle he’s following anybody’s rules, yet he is also a submissive – yet one who gets exactly what he wants. Who of us hasn’t dreamed of being bad-ass like that, do only what we please, break all the rules when it suits you? I think that’s the biggest attraction of all: this type of story lets us walk on the wild side for a few hours. And afterwards we can safely return to our law-abiding lives and don’t even have to kill anybody and we’re not at risk to be killed for our hidden passions. But there’s always the escape of “what if?”
