Here’s an author interview with Lisa Sanchez.
Find out what she had to say…
- How did you start writing erotica?
Hmmm…it just sort of happened? Just kidding! One of my favorite authors is J. R. Ward. I absolutely adore her style and the heat level of her scenes. I’ve never been one who enjoys fade to black scenes. I want to know the ins and outs (no pun intended!) of how the characters come together, their feelings etc. For that reason, I do my best to portray the sexual tension and urgency between the characters as they are coming together, as well as all the yummy details when they’re getting down to business. I’d say as far as erotica goes, I’m definitely on the softer side and tend more toward erotic romance. Either way, Obsessed is spicy and was a lot of fun to write.
- What’s your favourite published work of yours and why?
I’m really very proud of Obsessed. It’s a departure from what I normally write and I’m seriously in love with the hero, Nick. He’s angsty, and broody and all kinds of shmexy. Rowr!!
- What erotic authors do you enjoy reading?
Between working on my own manuscripts and chasing after my kids, I don’t get a ton of time to read. That being said, I have managed to squeak a few books in here and there. I really enjoyed Coming Clean by Inez Kelly, Three Over Par by Cathryn Brunet, and Eternity And A Day by Aline Hunter.
- Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I’m married to a police officer. Ideas for suspense novels roll in at a steady rate, lol! If I could just find the time to write as fast as the ideas come, I’d be in serious business!
- Do you have any unusual writing rituals?
I’m not sure if this is unusual, but I can’t write while the family is home. I have three girls and when they’re home, there is too much distraction. I get the bulk of my work done while they are in school. Same goes for the hubby.
- Where’s your favourite place to write?
I’ve got a comfy recliner in my family room that I like to sit in while I write. I usually kick my feet up and my Chihuahua will lie at my feet.
- Who is your favourite character from one of your stories and why?
I’m really attached to Nick, the hero from Obsessed. He’s so broken at the start of the story, and it was an absolute pleasure to see him grow, heal and step into the role of hero he was meant for.
- Do your nearest and dearest know what you do, and if so, what was their reaction when they found out?
Yes, my family and friends know I write steamy romance. I don’t shout it from the rooftops, but I don’t hide it either. I think you have to own what you do, and I’m extremely proud of my work.
- What was your ideal career when you were a child?
I’ve always wanted to write. Luckily, this was something my mother saw and fostered. She encouraged me to write creatively whenever I could, and I’m just so thankful.
- How do you get yourself in the mood to write?
I’m always in the mood to write! Music, though, really feeds my muse and helps fuel my emotion.
- What’s the best writing tip you’ve ever been given?
The writing community is very helpful. People want to see you succeed, and are happy to give pointers, tips etc. I think the best piece of advice I’ve received is to be true to my own voice, and not worry about what everyone else is doing.
- If you get writer’s block when you’re writing, how do you get around it?
I don’t know that I’ve ever been truly blocked. If my muse is quiet, it’s usually because there is something going on in my home/personal life that needs tending too. Once I’ve taken care of the stressor, my muse usually returns.
- If you could bring one of your characters to life, which one would it be and why?
Oooh, fans self. I’d definitely bring Nick to life. Not only is he visually pleasing to the eye with his fit physique and yummy tats, but his personality, the way he speaks (in and out of bed) make me weak in the knees.
- Which author, erotic or otherwise would you love to meet and why?
I’d love to meet J.R. Ward. She writes the most delicious alpha males, and is my absolute hero.
- What’s your favourite genre within erotica and why?
I enjoy paranormal as well as suspense. Paranormal because it’s such an escape from my normal, sometimes boring life, and suspense because it brings with it a rollercoaster of emotions.
- What are you working on at the moment?
I’ve just finished book three in my Hanaford Park series. It’s with my critique partners and beta readers right now. Once I wrap up edits and send it to my agent, I’ll start on one of two projects that have been swimming around in my head.
- What’s the biggest writing challenge you’ve ever taken on? Did you succeed?
I’m very much a contemporary girl. The third book in my Hanaford Park series involves time travel, so I spent a great deal of time doing research. I bow down to those who write historical. It’s hard work. While I really enjoyed stepping out of my comfort zone to tackle this particular book, I probably won’t venture into historical romance again.
- What’s your biggest writing achievement? Why?
Becoming published! It’s the culmination of a life long dream and hours and hours of hard work. Seeing my book listed on my publisher’s website, listening to people tell me how much they’ve enjoyed reading it, makes all the rejection, editing, and hours spent pounding away at the keys worthwhile.
