BATHING IN THE VOICE OF DANGER by Minnette Meador
Cringing on the ground, she tried to crawl away. An arm caught her around the waist, drew her from the floor and hauled her against a massive chest. The beat of his misplaced heart vibrated against her right shoulder. Long white fingers closed around her throat, almost meeting at the back. He pulled her face back to meet his gaze. Squeezing her eyes shut she struggled, digging her fingernails into the flesh of his forearm. The skin hardened into rock.
“See me.” The whispered words spun through the room. Belle had no strength to fight. She opened her eyes.
Tequelin stared down into her soul, his mouth opened softly, bending down to steal a kiss. When his lips touched her, everything changed.
The Belle Stalker – Chapter Twenty-Six
TODAY’S PRIZE: Any of Minnette’s paperback books, signed
Why is it we’re attracted to the bad boys in books? Are they more handsome, bigger, stronger than the nice guy? Is there something in their personalities that makes us love it when they talk? Or do they sweat some kind of aphrodisiac that makes us lose all grasp of morality? I had to ask myself these questions to write this book. Tequelin is by far the most seductive of my antagonists to date and at the same time the most dangerous. What makes him dangerous is not criminality. He is not greedy. He does not seek power. He is not looking for advancement or riches. What he is looking for is a chance to go home… and the journey has driven him insane. His obsession with Belle is the last dangling thread keeping him from killing everyone and he can do it.
What thrills us is the danger in the relationship. Fear and lust are very close to one another. Both get adrenalin pumping. Both quicken our hearts, make us sweat, set our ears ringing and shake our voice. The line is so thin between them that one can spill into another in less than a pounding heartbeat. Why we love to read about that, of course, is that the fantasy is very compelling while the reality is not.
This monster terrorizes belle. He haunts her dreams, steals her confidence, and corrupts her self-control. Yet when she has to surrender to him to save the only man she ever loved, there may be a bit of desire buried inside her too. There again is that thin veneer of fear and lust. When the story unfolds, we cheer Belle’s efforts to resist him… but secretly hope she doesn’t.
So don’t be too worried when you find yourself pulling for the bad guy. When the thrill, the danger of his touch leaves your heart thumping and your lips moist, when the sound of his voice commanding you forces air out of your lungs, keep in mind that one more step may take you to your own dark nature. The question is will you resist to the end or will you willingly surrender to the darkness? In your fantasies, of course. Minnette :o)
The police have done all they can, but it isn’t enough. When Belle finds the mutilated body of her lover strewn across the furniture she knows only her ex-husband, Homicide Detective Mike Cranston can stop the maniac who has been dogging her steps for over a year. The only problem is the man who stalks her…is not a man at all. Belle plays a dangerous game and only hopes that Cranston can stop the monster before it’s too late.
