Exposed – the secret world of writing erotica (Check out yesterday’s post for Part One)
So… talking about sex in front of a group of complete strangers. Of course, when consulted about this, I said yes. And (of course) I wondered what the hell I had let myself in for, when it actually came to The Day. Especially since my fond belief that no one would attend turned out to be utterly and completely wrong. There were people. There were really quite a LOT of people.
Thankfully, I had company up at the front of the audience. No, that doesn’t cover it. I had more than company, I had a fabulously talented friend who could cover up my mistakes, jump in when I fumbled my words and forgot what I was doing, and generally pretend to the entire crowd that yes, we were both professionals and obviously we knew what we were doing! Her name, by the way, is Elizabeth Cage, and you should totally check out her writing. Just saying.
I’ll admit it, I had a calming glass of red wine before the event (and I admire Elizabeth extremely for running our performance only on a cup of green tea). The wine helped. I trust I didn’t slur at our audience, but I was able actually to get words to come out of my mouth, which was more than I’d originally expected. What those words actually were, I’m not prepared to commit to! I know I read a story, and then Elizabeth read a (much better) story, and we talked to people who asked questions. I have a bad feeling that I porned up Jane Austen because, as I’m a Regency geek, she’s been almost irresistable. (For the record, other geeks should check out Jane Austen’s Regency World for articles and information on Jane Austen-related things.)
Other than that, I know I relied on Elizabeth to bail me out on more than one occasion. Amazingly, I haven’t put her off attending events with me, so we’re going to be talking at Waterstones in Canterbury in a couple of months time. If you like watching someone look like a right idiot, come along and I’ll oblige. If you like talking with brilliant erotic writers, come along and Elizabeth will oblige!
It was fun, despite everything. Be afraid, be very afraid – the Elizabeth Cage/Penelope Friday roadshow is… well, on the road!
