Writing to Music, Part II by Rawiya
Hello all, I’d like to thank Lucy Felthouse for having me on the blog today. My guestpost is part 2 of a three part series, writing to music. The first post is at my blog http://rawiyaserotica.blogspot.com/2011/02/xoxo-week-michael-mandrake.html from my other pseudonym Michael Mandrake. This one is from me, Rawiya.
First off, if you’re not sure who I am, I have an authors profile under my real name, Sharita L.
Anyone that knows me personally is aware of how much I love music and of some of the bands I like. In Michael’s post, he mentioned Duran Duran and Depeche Mode, which are huge influences and are in constant rotation on my player. Soft music, like Sade was also talked about which I really enjoy listening to when writing a love scene.
However, what about the music that sets a different kind of mood? The kind that means there’s action in the story, a high speed chase or a tense scene that may end up with your characters in an erotic romp?
For these, we have a variety. Nine Inch Nails is pretty popular when the moment between main characters is a little less than pretty. The hard edge song, Closer I use a lot because it invokes a raw and rough emotion. The pen flows a little more when hearing the lyrics.
Then, what about just normal activity in the book? Well, it can be many choices, mostly upbeat dance tunes maybe even some alternative rock. For my next story, Sweetest Taboo I listened to Sade, of course, as well as some Beyonce’, Christina Aguilera, and other artists where it’s sung by or about a woman in charge. Sweetest Taboo, is in contract status and should be out very soon.
For my next story already set to be released in the spring, Sugar Daddy, which will be part of the Who’s Your Daddy anthology from STARbooks press, I chose some Duran Duran, Depeche, as well as modern day hip-hop music because the story features a young gay man looking for the love of an older one.
Jay Z and a couple others, provided the backdrop for my character Matthew Davidson and his good friend, Devon Peartley. Both men are in their early twenties, so it put me in the frame of mind to think like one.
I have a wide selection of songs on my Mp3, mostly because I have a variety to what I listen to, but at times, I may seek out music by certain artists because they fit the character I’m writing. Music always helps even when stuck in an emotional rut and writing slump.
Hope you enjoyed my post. I want to thank Lucy for giving me her blog.
Here now is an Excerpt and Blurb from Sugar Daddy which will be released in the Spring at http://starbookspress.com as well as Amazon
Blurb: A short story of a young man, Matthew Davidson, who is seeking the love of an older black man. When he goes to an internet dating site, he finds the man he is looking for but the ad calls for a black or Hispanic male. Interested, Matthew puts up the picture of his best friend, Devon Peartly who is Black. Now though, his chat buddy would like to meet him in person.
Excerpt: After school one day, Devon came over to my place as he usually does when he didn’t follow Professor Hottie home. I had told him I saw an ad on GayMatch.com of a man who wished to talk with someone of Black or Hispanic variety that I had been in conversation with for about a week. Now, the man who had the screen name, dlovr69, wanted to see a picture. I really liked this guy, he seemed so sweet. Our chats that started innocently as we talked about my school, his work as an attorney, his wife, my single life would end with me wiping myself on my t-shirts or whatever cloths I had nearby after we cybered. God, I wanted him so bad and now this could all be gone in seconds when he found out I was not what he’d asked for.
We put down our bags, then, went straight for the computer to check my email. I had told him I needed to get a friend to take my photo because I did not have any that were recent. When I switched it on before clicking on the IE icon, there was a message from him with an attachment.
Devon raised an eyebrow, “Uh oh, the moment of truth. I hope Mister wonderful has teeth and he’s not in a walker.”
“Piss off…” I said since I had informed him that my “buddy” says he’s fifty-six. Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes and opened the message.
“Ooohhh shit…” I heard Devon say, “Fuck, no way, that is not him…no fucking way…”
Hoping that it was a good reaction, I lifted my lids, gazing upon one of the most beautiful individuals I had ever lay eyes on. “Fuck…” I muttered glancing at a man, dressed in a suit, a baldhead, a grey goatee, nearly perfect skin; not at all muscular, but definitely no stranger to the gym. “Shit…the perfect hue of brown too. Dark chocolate…fuck me…”
“Uh uh…this has got to be a mistake. He is not this fine. What picture did he steal?” Devon said, shaking his head.
Still staring, I wanted to know the same. He was not pretty; I didn’t like my men that way. I preferred ruggedly handsome, sort of edgy. Dlover69 fit the bill to a tee, if this were really him. “I dunno, mate. I mean, I’m not sure what to believe. Though, I have been very dishonest with him while we’ve been talking. I did not tell him that I was white, I told him I was a middle class black kid from Liverpool.”
Devon shrugged, “Hmph, figures. You would borrow my info just so you can get further with this bloke.” He paused, before nudging me to the left. “You know, you should just let me have a go with him since you told my story and all…”
“No way, you got your prince, remember?” I pushed back, tapping the refresh button on the on the task bar.
Thank you for your time and here is where you can find me.
