IN BED WITH ROMANCE: ARE AUTHORS UNFAITHFUL? by Sarah Ballance
A tongue-in-cheek look at character love from an author’s perspective.
When you’re an author, it’s in the job description to make readers fall in love with the main characters—even those we love to hate. It’s a rather unfortunate—albeit logical—truth, then, that if readers lack warm and fuzzies for the leads, they’re less likely to connect with the story. And let’s face it … most authors want their readers to connect … big time.
Which brings us to an important point: before readers can love a character, the author needs to be head-over-heels in love—or at least lust—with him. (Yep, even the bad ones … perhaps especially the bad ones, lol!) And that, dear readers, is where us authors, no matter how much we love our real-life men (or women), tend to stray.
Yep, I said it. We’re just a little bit unfaithful. Because if we want readers to see our guys as heroes, we have to love them first. And by love, I mean utter adoration meets sizzling hot, sheet-clenching, thigh drenching LUST … er, love. The kind that warms your heart and makes your tummy do those silly flips. The kind that strips us down to our innocence, then—if we’re lucky—takes said innocence for a raucous roll in the hay.
Now, clearly there’s no actual harm done, no matter how long you’re stuck picking those fictitious pieces of straw from your hair. A crush on a character who exists solely within the pages of a book is hardly a cause for marital discord for most of us, but truth be told, I really don’t want my man lusting after anyone—real or imagined—but me. To that end, the little vein on his forehead is probably throbbing at a record pace right about now as he’s reading this. Even the thought of me drooling after some guy I’ve invented would make my husband crazy in a most delish, growly, caveman kind of way … which is exactly the way I like it. But I’ve got a surprise for him: it kinda is cheating. Not on my husband, though. With him.
Er, say what? It’s beautifully simple. Everything I love about my heroes comes straight from the guy I married. Through my characters, I see over and over again just why I fell for my man, why I can’t imagine being with anyone but him, and why no one else will ever measure up (let alone put up with me). What I’ve ended up with is sixteen incredible years of utter adoration meets sizzling hot, sheet-clenching, thigh drenching LUST with a man who fills the role of “hero” in every conceivable way.
And affairs—real or imagined—really don’t get any hotter than that.
Sarah lives a charmed life as the mother of six incredible homeschooled children, all of whom are completely adorable when they’re asleep. Her husband of many years (long, long years, he calls them) is the kind of guy who could teach those heroes from the books a thing or two about romance, not that he’d readily admit it. Completely supportive of her love of writing fiction, he’s generously offered to help with any necessary research for “the good parts.” She’s never had to ask twice.
BLURB: UNFORGIVEN (PACKING HEAT #1)
Riley Beckett’s past just came back to haunt her . . . and this time, he’s got a gun.
When Gage Lawton finds his brother shot dead on his back porch, every shred of evidence points to one person: Gage’s former lover, Riley. He and she didn’t part ways on good terms, and he’s not planning to rekindle anything now–not when he’s got a revolver pointed at her head and a finger on the trigger.
A year after Riley swore she and Gage were over, he returns in a hail of gunfire. One look into those achingly familiar blue eyes and she knows how wrong she was to let him go, but now far more than their heated past stands in the way. A twist of fate puts them in the crosshairs of a killer, leaving Riley with two slim options: trust her greatest betrayer or face a murderer on her own.
