The Dynamics of Writing Ménage by Starla Kaye
The dynamics of writing about any kind of romantic relationship is tricky, just as is experiencing one in real life. Two people with different personal histories, different likes and dislikes, different outlooks on life, different habits and so much more. It sometimes amazes me that two people can ever find a way to live together or love together for more than a day or so.
I have been writing romance for a number of years now, but mainly about relationships only involving two people. Of course, the world around them, family, and friends are also involved and has effects on that growing relationship. Only recently did I decide to try my hand at writing about a more complicated relationship with three people.
Anytime you establish a particular importance of a character (one of the main characters, an important side character, a child, or a pet) that character must be included regularly in the story line. When you have three equally important characters, it becomes a definite challenge to play fair with everyone and give them their time in the spotlight.
In creating any main character, the author must make the character as real and as likeable as possible to keep the reader wanting to know more about him or to be in his/her corner rooting for them to reach their goal, including finding love and happiness. Creating three main characters is even tougher. It is particularly challenging to make the reader feel tied to each of them and want to see them happy.
And then there is the whole matter of writing a satisfying-to-the-reader sex scene involving three characters. It is a lot more than letting them know that Tab A goes into Slot B and Tab C goes somewhere, too. The reader needs to understand what each of these three people is feeling, what they are doing, and how they are concerned about the other two people in the scene.
In my medieval ménage romance, THEIR LADY GLORIANA, I wanted to create a story about three very unique people and how they managed to find happiness together. Each character had complicated and tragic pasts and reasons why they never believed they could find true happiness. Each character somehow finds a person that gives them a small ray of hope, that surprising chance at finding love. Then the three people involved manage to discover something even more amazing…a loving relationship with two other people.
THEIR LADY GLORIANA
Think medieval times when honorable men must do what is required of them. Thomas Lancaster, a widower with bad memories of marriage and a young son he barely knows, is a hardened knight loyal to his king. In reward for his efforts fighting in the Crusades, King Edward gives him Middlemound Castle to hold for the crown. But he must marry the beautiful young widow of the castle’s previous lord.
Lady Gloriana Stewart suffered brutally in her first marriage and has no desire to marry again. She has no choice and must protect her people and obey her king. All she wants is for her new husband to give her a baby. Thomas refuses to even consider it.
Complicating the situation is Sir Rowan Montgomery, Thomas’s first knight, friend, and lover. Complicating the problem even more, Gloriana has feelings for both her new husband and for Rowan.
