Here’s an interview with erotic writer Leigh Court.
Take it away, Leigh….
- How did you start writing erotica?
I’m a big fan of the Secrets anthologies (Red Sage Publishing) because they contain four sexy short stories (1 historical, 1 paranormal, 2 contemporary – something for everyone) that are easy to read before bedtime and give you sexy dreams! So I tried to write one, and sold it to them! The rest is history 🙂
- What’s your favourite published work of yours and why?
I love The Disciplinarian (in Secrets Volume 15) because it’s a very emotional story with a gut-wrenching Black Moment for my star-crossed Victorian characters.
- What erotic authors do you enjoy reading?
Emma Holly, J.R. Ward, and so many others!
- Where do you draw your inspiration from?
As a writer, I love to play the ‘What If’ game. I get a lot of inspiration from turning an idea on its head.
- Do you have any unusual writing rituals?
I need total peace and quiet to write. And late nights usually are my most creative time.
- Who is your favourite character from one of your stories and why?
I love Viscount Damian Hunt from my Victorian story The Bet (Secrets Volume 27) because despite his rakish reputation, he’s really an honorable chap. He thinks he’s a lost cause, but in reality, he’s just lost. And my heroine Claire helps him find his way.
- What was your ideal career when you were a child?
My ideal career was the one I had – as a journalist, so I could tell stories for a living!
- How do you get yourself in the mood to write?
Red wine always seems to work for me!
- What’s the best writing tip you’ve ever been given?
It’s no secret that writing is hard work. The first ‘tip’ a writer always learns is just to sit in that computer chair and write!
- Which author, erotic or otherwise would you love to meet and why?
Anne Rice and Stephenie Meyer, and not because they both write about vampires. It’s because they had a story to tell and didn’t let anything stop them from telling it! And ultimately, they succeeded wildly.
- What’s your favourite genre within erotica and why?
I write Victorian erotic romance because it lets me be, um, ‘comfortably vague’ about the sexy bits.
- What are you working on at the moment?
I recently switched gears and write a Roman epic (well, not exactly an epic – it’s a novella) called Conqueror Vanquished (Ellora’s Cave Publishing). By that title, you can probably tell who ends up the real conqueror and who ends up conquered! (I love writing erotic romances…)
- What’s your biggest writing achievement? Why?
Being published. It’s such a validation of your writing to know that a publisher believes in your talent, and wants the world to be able to read your story. It really is a dream come true for me!
Jennifer August says
Hi Leigh, great interview! I’m in shock, though, that you can write in total peace and quiet. I think I might be jealous of that.
I loved The Disciplinarian. That was such a great story! I’m going to have to track down the Vanquished Conqueror now!
Amber Green says
Good thing you love writing them. It’d be hell to be so very good at something you hated doing.
