Here’s an author interview from Lisa Darling.
Find out what she had to say…
- How did you start writing erotica?
I got into a lot of trouble in Jr. High (7th-9th grade) when I started writing, what is now considered, erotica or dark romance. Admittedly, my writing was very explicit for someone of that age. My classmates loved my tales…oh they mimeographed them in secret and passed them around the school like a 2.00 whore! Again, my teachers and guidance counselors were ‘disturbed’ but, because the stories showed such a great scale of imagination and, well, talent, they were torn over what to do. They called my parents in for conferences. My mother was upset but my father said I wasn’t hurting anyone and to just leave me alone and let me write.
- What’s your favourite published work of yours and why?
I think every author’s ‘favorite’ is their current story and I’m no different. My favorite story of mine is “The Heart of War”. I’ve always felt that, of all the Greek Pantheon, Ares was probably the most reviled and misunderstood of all the Olympian Gods. I tried to stay true to what Readers would probably have in mind when they think of Ares God of War, at least at first. In The Heart of War, he’s drop dead-gorgeous (being a Greek God what else would one expect? : ), delightfully moody, grumpy and just a brooding bugger when we first meet him. He’s living in exile on a secluded Greek Isle with a harem of women and a small troop of guards. Turning him into a hero without making it contrived was difficult. It had to be a natural progression, the heroin, Alena, couldn’t make him into a better man-or God in this case-he had to want to be better because of her. Don’t get me wrong, he doesn’t turn into a big ball of mush by the end, he’s still Ares but a better, stronger, Ares.
If you could bring one of your characters to life, which one would it be and why?
Ares. Not only is he outrageously sexy, in my eyes, he’s the ultimate “Bad Boy”. The one every woman wants but won’t admit to except to herself in the deepest darkest loneliest hours of night.
- Which author, erotic or otherwise would you love to meet and why?
Stephen King. He’s been my idol for the last 30 years. I’d give my right arm just for the chance to sit down and have a cup of coffee with him. I think he’s just outstanding.
- What’s your favourite genre within erotica and why?
Dark Erotic Romance. Life is nothing without Darkness and Conflict. We all tend to shy away from the darker times in our lives but without them we wouldn’t know when we were walking in the Light and we would never know just how strong we can be. I think True Love requires testing, some times very harsh testing.
- What are you working on at the moment?
Child of War, the sequel to The Heart of War. The God of War and his Lady Love Alena are about to give birth to the devil’s spawn!
