First of all, thank you so much to the Erotica For All website and to Lucy Felthouse for inviting me to be here!

Full disclosure, I almost called this post “In Defense of ‘The Good Bits’” but then I realized that I didn’t want to defend anything – parties are a lot more fun than court trials, after all! – and a celebration seemed much more appropriate.

If you’re reading this post, you probably already have an appreciation for what I am calling The Good Bits of stories. You know what I’m talking about. The parts that make your heart pound and your breath quicken…they might even give you goosebumps or cause you to shift in your seat. I LOVE these parts of the story…which is why I write the stories that I do. But why? Why are these parts in particular so compelling? What is it about them?

When Completely Yours was finished, edited and proofread, the next step I had to consider was the cover. I had created covers before, using stock images from Adobe or other sites, but I had a really hard time trying to find the perfect image for this novel. One of the problems was that my characters are Black and there were shockingly few sexy images out there featuring Black characters.

So I decided to hire a photographer to do a photoshoot for the cover. I didn’t have a a huge budget, but luckily I was able to find a photographer (Leslie Pitt https://www.instagram.com/afrofilmviewer/) who was willing to give me a great price for the shoot. Of course, it’s still more expensive than buying a stock photo, but the result is a unique cover with a gorgeous picture.

Writing erotic PNR

Although authoring erotic paranormal romances has become one of my fave subgenres, my writing career didn’t start out that way. In the beginning, I veered toward thrillers where there was a romantic connection between the hero and heroine. The romance was secondary to the story, kind of like a bonus or the cherry on top of a sundae.

As I explored different subgenres, I noticed I had a talent for humor, especially in dialogue. With that in mind, I next delved into contemporary romcoms. Still a favorite of mine.

Someone beat me to the bench.

It was the first thing Dev noticed as he arrived to the clearing at the end of the path. The trailhead was set a hundred feet back from the edge of the bluff. The stone bench where people liked to sit stood below an ancient oak and was angled to face east. The sky was lightening gradually but he’d arrived in time for the main event. It was still too dim to see anything more than his companion’s silhouette.

At first, Dev thought to steer clear—no one came to the bluff because they wanted to chat. Though, he might give a wave and make conversation once the sun rose. He could fan out wide, sit on the grass and enjoy a glorious view of the sun rising over the valley. There was plenty of beauty for them both. Only, the closer he got, the more the silhouette on the bench became unmistakable. Even half-covered by a baseball cap and shrouded in darkness, it was hard to miss Shea’s pouf of hair.
