When audio books became available, first as tape cassettes, then CDs, and finally, digital files, there was scant motivation for me to partake of them because I really enjoy reading. Indeed, I questioned why anyone would prefer to listen to a book when reading is so pleasurable. Replacing recreational or educational books with audio versions did not resonate with me at all.

There are, of course, people for whom audio books make perfect sense, such as the blind or those whose eyesight is impaired drastically. For them, audio is a far better option than Braille. People born with dyslexia, a condition that makes reading extremely difficult and definitely not enjoyable, also benefit from them. And those who are primarily auditory learners would do well to indulge in audio books to optimize their learning experience.

D.L. King’s newly released anthology of femdom stories, Her Wish is Your Command, is a treat for aficionados of that genre. All 21 stories are fun, imaginative, and sexy in a decidedly naughty way – yet not so hard core as to scare off adventuresome newbies and BDSM-curious readers.

Most of these stories don’t involve mistresses and submissives heavy into the lifestyle. Indeed, a common thread features a vanilla male encountering a dominant woman who orchestrates events such that their latent submissive nature is revealed and they are encouraged to embrace what they have discovered about themselves.

None of the dommes are of the ominous spider woman variety. They are for the most part portrayed simply as self-possessed women with a penchant for being in charge, sexually and otherwise. In many of the stories there is a playful quality to the women as they interact with their submissive prey.

Perhaps my favorite vignette is A Different Kind of Reality Show. A young exhibitionist lands a gig in which he is to be naked on live camera for a week and subject to following the voice commands of an exclusive audience of women. He did not anticipate that sexual humiliation would be on the agenda (and that he would like it) when he signed the contract.

This anthology is highly recommended to anyone with an affinity for well-written femdom literature, and for readers exploring the genre who are looking for a representation of the best it has to offer.

eBook Review: Becoming Maria by B.A. Dalton

B.A. Dalton’s Becoming Maria is a deliciously erotic story of a man with an unusual hobby: helping selective women discover their latent submissive sexuality. Although Brock is central to this tale of serial seductions and transformations, the story is told from the perspective of his latest – unnamed – conquest, recently divorced and open to adventure. Their paths first cross while she is out with friends celebrating her new freedom. Over the course of the evening they catch one another’s eye across the room several times, but no overture is made until a note is brought to her by a waitress after he leaves. It says simply, I will own you; a telephone number is written below the message.

At first she is insulted. But, to her surprise, she is aroused as well… and intrigued. A week later, her bravado fortified by a couple glasses of wine, she calls the number on the card. An answering machine message confirms that she has reached the correct number, details the circumstances of their encounter, and reiterates the mantra I will own you expanded with “You want it, you need it, and you crave it.” It also instructs her to call back within 24 hours to declare her intentions by saying either yes or no and providing a cell phone number where she can be reached.

After waiting until the eleventh hour, she makes the fateful call and, with great difficulty, manages to communicate her decision to proceed. Thus begins her journey into sexual self-discovery, though for a while she wonders if her imagination is playing tricks on her as there is a significant delay in acknowledging her response. Indeed, the progress of her adventure from then on is not hurried.

She receives cryptic instructions with no explanations. When she arrives for her first assignation at Brock’s hotel people begin referring to her as Maria, which is not her name. Gradually she is drawn into his mysterious and erotic game and finds herself relishing the increasingly submissive, humiliating, and arousing acts required of her. Ultimately, at a “coming out” party, she learns that she is merely one of many who have become Maria when she meets all the Marias that preceded her and publicly experiences a fairly elaborate introduction to some intense BDSM activities.

Despite being a relatively short book, Becoming Maria proceeds at a fairly languid pace that makes it seem much longer than it really is. This feature is a refreshing change from standard erotica fare where significant relationships and plot shifts often develop within a few paragraphs or pages. This book is recommended to readers with a taste for well-written kinky literature.

eBook Review: Mittens by Phoenix Baker

One definite advantage of the proliferation of self-published ebooks is the tremendous diversity of naughty books now available to readers. No longer is the selection of erotic books on the market limited to genres and themes deemed by publishers to have the potential to sell enough copies to justify the expense of printing and distribution. Certainly niche books such as Phoenix Baker’s Mittens would not have stood a snow ball’s chance in Hell of being published in days past.

Like many erotic novellas, Mittens is basically a vignette focusing on a sexually charged episode rather than a fully developed story with a substantive plot and a clearly defined beginning, middle, and end. Nevertheless, it is an interesting, erotic and, in parts, amusing read that details the sudden transition of a relationship between long-time best friends Samantha and Nina to lovers, despite Samantha previously having no inkling of her propensity for being bisexual. That the overindulgence of alcohol – social lubricant extraordinaire – precipitated Nina confessing not just her love for Samantha, but her desire to be dominated and sexually humiliated by her, has a ring of truth that almost everyone can relate to on some level.

Purportedly this story is based on the author’s own experience with her current life partner. As the story unfolds it definitely has a feel of authenticity to it. The narrative meanders from awkward and timid moments to raging lust to giggling camaraderie to deep introspection, sometimes within a single paragraph.

Curiously, this story does not as yet involve mittens – perhaps it will in possible sequels – other than a brief reference in Samantha’s inner dialogue as she contemplates how she can help her friend experience her fantasy of extreme objectification. The somewhat geeky mad scientist Samantha envisions securing oven mitt-like devices on Nina to reduce her to the level of an animal, in addition to eliminating her ability to speak for the same reason.

Although it is clear that BDSM will be a part of the sexual side of their relationship, during the course of this story that doesn’t materialize significantly. At the onset of their first liaison, Samantha convincingly assumes a scary persona to accommodate Nina’s fantasies and manages to trigger a spectacular orgasm simply by threatening to subject Nina to an extremely degrading act. All indications are that future developments along those lines will not necessarily adhere to customary D/s lifestyle activities, but rest assured kinkiness will prevail.

Perhaps because as readers we have been weaned on fiction with plots, character development and conflict, we generally expect the same from erotic books, despite the fact that our primary motivation for reading them is to become aroused by experiencing some form of sexual scenario vicariously. This particular intellectual hypocrisy isn’t quite as prevalent in short erotic stories, probably since even in mainstream literature short stories often are no more than vignettes in which all the standard story elements of novels are not present or necessary. Ariane Arborene’s Two Cuckolding FemDom Stories unapologetically embraces the no-frills approach to erotica but does it in an entirely different medium: sound – it is an audio book, one of the first in this genre and possibly a harbinger of a new trend in erotica enjoyment for those with a taste for kink.

The stories in this audio book will likely be best enjoyed by listeners predisposed to either femdom or cuckolding sensibilities. Aficionados of such stories are in for a treat; not only are these stories well written and deliciously erotic, but the sultry and provocative narration by Holly Jackson is spot on.

The first tale begins with a romantic dinner between a mistress and her lover for the evening, during which they are served by her husband while he wears only his humiliation and a skimpy apron. The flirting and repartee orchestrated by the woman as the meal progresses succeeds at tormenting the cuckold before inevitably the diners follow up their meal with some erotic naughtiness as their distraught server is forced to watch. This punishment is in response to the husband interviewing for a new job in the U.K. without asking his wife whether or not she wants to leave Manhattan for London – his lack of deference to her has violated the essence of their female-led relationship.

The second story is considerably longer and more complex. The action takes place at a freewheeling rock concert after party attended by a dominant woman and her submissive mate. Due to a real or imagined dalliance between the man and another woman, his wife is determined to demonstrate her displeasure by openly hooking up with several younger and more virile partygoers. At one point the man is forced to watch her have sex with the lead guitarist. However, the ultimate humiliation occurs when he functions as a bottom to a male top while cleaning up evidence of his wife’s sexual exploits in a decidedly submissive fashion.

When asked about her writing style, Ms. Arborene had the following to say: “I am writing a particular kind of erotica where my goal is to turn on my readers without much time spent on plot.  I know there are people in the world without erotic fulfillment in their lives and if I can bring them that quick erotic pleasure, that’s my goal.  A scene that they can put themselves into… that is what I want to give them.”

She definitely has a refreshingly honest approach to creating erotica for people on the go. Enjoying erotica in e-book format is often referred to jokingly as reading with one hand. Expanding upon that same train of thought then, listening to erotic audio books is reading hands free. You can’t stop progress.
