Book Review: Fallen by Justine Elyot (@justineelyot)

FallenSet in London in 1865, Fallen is escapism at its best. Justine Elyot tells a wonderful tale with authentic language, and paints a vivid picture of what life would have been like at the time. The story centres around James Stratton, a young man who makes a living by writing erotic stories for anonymous clients, gained via his uncle’s shop, which sells erotic art, amongst other things.

When James receives an intriguing invitation, he is unable to resist. He soon finds himself in a situation where he is frequently encouraged to dominate and punish a blind upper class young woman. Augusta is beautiful, terribly naive, and has led a sheltered life – therefore she finds it easier to allow her employee and companion, Mrs Shaw, to simply take over. But James is no pushover, and when his and Augusta’s relationship develops beyond the physical, drastic action must be taken.

I don’t want to say any more and ruin the surprise, so I’ll just say that this is a wonderfully written, unique book. It’s sexy, seductive and kinky, but is also incredibly romantic. If you enjoy historical erotic romance with lashings (pun intended) of kink, you should definitely check out Fallen.

Book Review: Obsessed by Rachel Kramer Bussel (ed.)

ObsessedIt’s been a little while since I read an anthology, and I’m glad I decided to pick this one up. Obsessed is edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel and contains some authors well known in the erotic romance genre – Portia Da Costa, Justine Elyot, Charlotte Stein, Kristina Wright, Elizabeth Coldwell and K D Grace to name but a few. The theme, as you’ve probably already guessed, is obsession, and it was very interesting to see how the authors interpreted this theme in so many different ways.

There were non-speaking scenes, bosses and employees, earthquakes, car breakdowns, new neighbours, illicit and risky trysts, and much more. The variety was amazing, as was the writing. There were some stories which stood out for me, and really resonated, but overall, there wasn’t a bad tale nestled between these covers. Sure, I liked some better than others, but that’s always going to be the case in an anthology. I’d definitely recommend this to erotic romance fans – it’s hot!

eBook Review: Ask No Questions by Justine Elyot

Ask No QuestionsAsk No Questions is an erotic romance novella by Justine Elyot. Often known for her kinky BDSM stories, this was something a little different from Justine. This novella is still very hot, don’t get me wrong, but the sex is vanilla – if you can call sex in a tractor vanilla! This is definitely not a bad thing, though, just a variation on what I’ve read in Justine’s other books.

This is the story of Rhys, a Welsh hill farmer. He’s fairly new to the farming life, having made the decision to leave his old existence behind and live a very isolated life, for the most part cut off from the world around him. He’s got his dog for company, but only sees people when he heads out to the shops or the farmers’ market.

That is, until he finds a woman in his barn on a horrible rainy day. She’s clearly darted in there for protection from the elements and has fallen asleep. Rhys is immediately enthralled by her – her beauty, seeming innocence, and the tiny hot pants she wears.

When the girl wakes, she won’t tell Rhys anything except for her name. Not where she’s from, why she was on his farm, where was going… nothing. Instead of pushing, Rhys allows her to stay a while, realising that he doesn’t particularly want to talk about his past, either. The two of them are clearly attracted to one another, and as the tension grows, they fall into a kind of trance where all that matters is the here and now.

They hardly know each other, but somehow it doesn’t matter. What follows is a very sweet, yet sensual story of two people taking solace in each other and ignoring the rest of the world and the pain it brings. There’s sex in a tractor, lots of laughs and a real sense that, every now and again, it would be great to live that kind of existence. Of course, real life intrudes in the end, but still…

As I said before, this is something gentler, sweeter from Justine Elyot, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s a lovely, well-written story with a hunky hero and lots of hot sex and a good fun story – what’s not to like? Well done, Ms. Elyot.
