In Anyone Else’s Shoes is part of Xcite Books’ Romance line, and written by M. L. Joslyn. Having said that, I didn’t think it was overly romantic.
It tells the story of Emma Green, a workaholic manager of a shoe store. She’s living with her now ex-boyfriend, and they have a friends-with-benefits arrangement. Emma’s best friend, Alyssa, is somewhat of a sex addict. So, although Emma likes her job, all those factors together have made her yearn for something new. Something challenging, exciting.
The something new and exciting comes along sooner than she thought. The company she works for, the trendy chain of women’s shoe stores, Untamed Soles, has just hired a new Regional Vice President, Jason Eastman. He’s young and full of ideas for growing the company even further. He’s delighted with Emma’s work ethic and the performance of her store, and offers her a promotion. However, he’s also interested in her on a more personal basis, and seems to have no qualms about mixing business with pleasure.
Emma’s unsure what to do. There’s no doubt in her mind that Jason is smoking hot, but he’s also way younger than her, and doesn’t have the confident personality she usually goes for in a guy. She’s getting her sexual needs seen to occasionally by her ex, Ty, so does she really need to jump into bed with her boss? Will it do more harm than good?
I was a bit underwhelmed by this book, I have to say. Given the line it’s part of, I was expecting much more romance, and there wasn’t really any, in my opinion. There was fun, laughs and sex, sure, but not hearts and flowers. I liked the lead character, Emma, but I wasn’t at all keen on either Ty, her ex, or Jason. Her friend Alyssa was air headed and annoying, too. The writing style of this novella is good, but I just didn’t find myself caring massively about the outcome.
