If you are like me, the title At Her Feet announces in large bold letters that at the very least this book is a femdom story that involves a beta male and an alpha female. Wrong! The only correct parts of that assumption are that it’s a femdom story and it has an alpha female in it. And trust me on this, this is not like any femdom book you’ve ever read, even ones with a F/f dynamic.
At Her Feet is basically a contemporary love story that deals with a relatively small niche in the BDSM world – age play. My own personal prejudices are such that if this story had involved a “Daddy” and his “Little Girl,” my first reaction would have been a resounding Ick! Inexplicably, since the main characters embrace the roles of “Mami” and her “Little Girl” it worked for me and intellectually I was able to relate to Pilar and Suzy and immerse myself in their lives. Go figure!
Perhaps what I enjoyed most about this book is that it is absent of all the clichés and stereotypes commonly found in BDSM-themed literature. This is simply a story about two (not larger than life) lesbians in search of that ideal lover who will mesh perfectly with their needs and sensibilities. The women meet online in a kinky chat room and quickly decide to take a chance on a face-to-face rendezvous.
They are an interesting pair. Pilar is a thirty-nine-year-old second generation Mexican-American who works as a wardrobe stylist on television shows; Suzy is the 27-year-old daughter of a Jamaican mother and a Korean father, and is pursuing a career in digital marketing. Despite their cultural differences, they soon discover they have more in common than not.
The story progresses with a degree of humor and plenty of steamy sexual escapades, many of which include fairly intense corporal punishments. Normally I am not drawn to stories with traumatic back-stories and characters experiencing inner angst as they struggle with their personal demons, but author Rebekah Weatherspoon managed to integrate those story elements with such deftness that I didn’t find them bothersome.
Indeed, the more I read At Her Feet I came to realize that it is the best and most original book that I have read in any genre for a very long time. I would recommend this book to absolutely anyone with an interest in reading good quality erotica. It is a well-written story that just happens to have a series of raunchy sexual encounters in it. This book is more about love and relationships than it is about kinky sex.
