Here’s an author interview with Kayla Lords. Take it away, Kayla…
- How did you start writing erotica?
In 2012, I started a blog to chronical my journey into masturbation and orgasms, but I also wanted a place to write out all the sexual fantasies that played in my head. I thought I was just sexually repressed (which I was) but writing erotica, both fiction and non-fiction, is something I love to do. If I could spend more time as Kayla Lords in the erotic writing world than I do under my actual name in the “regular” world as a writer, I’d be a very happy woman.
- What erotic authors do you enjoy reading?
Christine Feehan is my number one favorite, but I also love Christina Mandara and Tori Carson. Christina write’s hot BDSM fetish stories while Tori write’s Dominance and submission the way I do – a real life look, with a bit of what I called “kinky fuckery” thrown in.
- Where do you draw your inspiration from?
The inspiration for all my Sir and Babygirl stories comes directly from my real life relationship with my own Dominant. The details are different, of course, but the emotions are very real.
- Where’s your favourite place to write?
My favorite place is anywhere with a comfortable chair that’s also quiet. When I’m at home, that’s the kitchen table. I also have my favorite spot at a Starbuck’s close to home. My dream is to one day have a home-office that is my writing sanctuary.
- Do your nearest and dearest know what you do, and if so, what was their reaction when they found out?
My mother is the one who has believed in my writing talents and dreams since I was a child, and yet she has no clue I’m an erotic author. The problem, as I see it, is that if I tell her about Kayla Lords the author, she’ll learn about Kayla Lords the sexual submissive and sex blogger. I’m not ready for that kind of disclosure yet. Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough. Outside of the friends I’ve made through blogging and writing, only one “vanilla” friend knows I write under the name Kayla Lords.
- How do you get yourself in the mood to write?
Gosh, I hope this doesn’t sound horrible, but I’m always ready to write. Story lines, dialogues, and entire scenes fill my head most of the time. The problem, for me, is that while the mood to write is with me, the opportunity isn’t. I need silence so I can concentrate, but I have two boys, 9 and 5, so quiet is a luxury in my house.
- What’s the best writing tip you’ve ever been given?
Just write. For years, I couldn’t get more than a page written because I was proofing and editing while I was writing. Now, I write it out and know it’s going to have a lot of errors. My perfectionist heart hates it but if I don’t, I’ll never get the whole story out of my head.
- Which author, erotic or otherwise would you love to meet and why?
Hmmm, well, Christine Feehan, just so I can swoon and go fan-girl on her, but there are countless erotic authors that I’ve met online that I would kill to meet: Christina Mandara, Tori Carson, Jenna Fox, Suzy Ayers, Heather Cole, and Sheri Savill, just to name a few.
- What are you working on at the moment?
For the first time, I’ve got a couple of projects going on. I let my blog followers pick a story I started on my blog to turn into a book, so that’s top of the list right now. It’s about a Domme who runs a kinky sex education class. I’ve got stories to tell from her perspective but also the students. I like the erotic aspect as well as the emotional and mental aspect of different characters, so I’ll use this project to explore both for all my characters. I’ve also got two short stories to write for two different anthologies due by the end of the year, as well.
- What’s your biggest writing achievement? Why?
My biggest writing achievement is the fact that I wrote and published at all. Second on the list is that I’ve transitioned to a full-time writer, not all of it erotic, though. My dream has always been to write and be published. The fact that I do both now is amazing. The next achievement/goal on the list is to actually see my words in print.
