In the fifth of a series of interviews with authors from Smut by the Sea Volume 3, I’d like to welcome AJ Roman. Take it away, AJ…
If you could go on holiday to any beach in the world where would you go?
I am originally from Hawaii, which has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Still, it is a fantasy of mine to visit the beaches of Phuket, Thailand, or to scuba dive through Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
What’s your favourite beach memory?
I don’t really have a memory of this, but it’s one of my mom’s favorite stories. When we were little, my mother would take me and my brother to the beach on the island of Kaua’I to play. She would always have cheese and apple slices with her for our snacks. One day, when I was maybe two years old, I wandered right into the water with a slice of apple in one hand and a piece of cheese in the other. My brother, who saw that I was completely submerged, got excited and cried to my mom. She was as calm as could be, and told him to go to me and grab me so that my head was above water. He actually dragged me out of the water, and I had no idea what was going on. All I knew was that I now had applesauce in one hand and cheese whiz in the other hand because I refused to let go of my snack.
You’re taking a stroll along the sea front, what are you eating?
Other than cheese and apple slices? I would probably be carrying a delightful tropical cocktail with a pineapple wedge, orchid, and umbrella.
Who would you like to see in skimpy speedos/ teeny tiny bikini?
For men, I love WWE Superstars Dean Ambrose and Corey Graves. (Google them. You’re welcome.) For women, I love Rachel McAdams. She has the greatest booty for a bikini.
On the beach do you prefer sunbathing or more vigorous activities?
Both! I cannot just lie on the beach without wanting to go into the water and play. I also feel that the best way to relax after riding the waves is to lay out and let the sun do its thing.
Sun or shade?
I’m a sun baby. I’m Hawaiian, and I have never had a sunburn in my life.
What inspired your story in Smut by the Sea vol 3?
Well, I admit the story was semi-autobiographical. There is a beach by the Palos Verdes tide pools that has a lot of boulders that can lend nicely to private activities, and when I was younger, my then-boyfriend and I took advantage of the opportunity one afternoon. I don’t remember that much about him, but I do remember the beach, and I know that the locals take their favorite spots very seriously. The trick is to go when the tide is low enough because the area can become dangerous. It is also imperative that one seizes the moment when it comes, because there are also a lot of fishermen in the area!
