Right now, most of us see a romance as a love story between a man and a woman that contains a happy ending, with the heroine going off with Mr. Right. But that wasn’t always the case.

Centuries ago, people married for reasons other than love. They married for money, status or property, and love was something found outside marriage. The most famous romance in our literature, Romeo and Juliet, doesn’t have a happy ending, unless your idea of a good HEA is uniting in heaven.

I had the publisher’s approval for Make Me Wet, a selkie (a mythical being that shifts shape between seal and human form) tale, before I wrote the first word. I had the research done, the plot down, the characters drawn. I had everything but the words. And I fought to find them for a couple of months before admitting to myself that something was missing. In this story setting was a character and that character was proving particularly hard to connect with.

eBook Review: Break Me In by Sara Brookes

Break Me InBreak Me In is book three in the Geek Kink series by Sara Brookes. I really enjoyed the first two, and love the premise, so I was eager to get my hands on this third instalment. I’m glad to say I wasn’t disappointed.

Break Me In tells the story of Elena and Alex. Elena is a Domme who is happy to dominate men, but avoids relationships at all costs. Alex is a barista in the local coffee shop, and he’s going through a seriously tough time in his life, one he’s trying to bury beneath alcohol.

The two have been friends for years and years, but it seems things are set to change. Alex is curious about BDSM, submission in particular, and he wants Elena to teach him how it works, to figure out if it’s a part of himself he’s been missing out on all this time. But Elena is more interested in helping him overcome his demons – namely his alcoholism – and puts that ahead of anything else, even though she risks losing him forever.

Fortunately, a spell in rehab helps Alex to defeat some of his demons, but not all. He still has a messy past, and is eager to have submission be part of his future. It will change their friendship forever, but Alex doesn’t seem to see it that way, so Elena convinces herself she can be Alex’s Domme without any emotions getting involved.

Within their new dynamic, Alex flourishes and is happier than he’s ever been. But it inevitably unearths an attraction, and even more. Elena’s terrified for so many reasons, but Alex is determined to break down the walls she’s put up around her heart. Just as he’s getting somewhere, however, his own past puts a huge blight on any potential future for the two of them.

This is one heart-rending read, and I loved it. Sara Brookes is an excellent writer; she has a way of weaving emotion, desire and lust effortlessly into a realistic storyline – the result being a serious page-turner of a book. The storyline, characters, tension and emotion in this book are top notch and I couldn’t wait to see how it turned out. This is no traditional romance, but that’s what makes it so real, so unique. The cameos from characters I’ve read about already added extra flavour to the book, but you can still read this as a standalone novel. Overall, definitely recommended to BDSM erotic romance fans – check out the whole series if you haven’t already.

As I’m sure y’all are aware, I have a new book out called Touched by Lightning. It’s an erotic paranormal romance about people with superhuman abilities. In this world, an organization called the Order of Themis is comprised of thousands of people who display those abilities and use them to protect the innocent from injustice. I like to think of it as a blending of X-Men and The Crow. Which is what this post is about, how much I adore my superheroes.
