I write in several genres, erotica/erotic romance being one of them. When I was a young writer I insisted on writing ‘serious’ fiction, and even though the idea of love and sex appealed to me and often leaked into my stories, I didn’t want to write smut. The very idea! I eventually dabbled in fan fiction, and that was where I discovered I liked to write steamy prose. When I tried my hand at original erotic fiction—and enjoyed it—my whole attitude about the genre changed.
I like writing about love, relationships, and definitely, sex. It takes a certain kind of courage to write out juicy detailed scenes and put them up for public consumption. I know that every time I read an erotic story, the author was at least a little nervous about how their fantasy would be received. Writing is a very personal act, and writing about sex even more so. We’re all trying to titillate each other and we don’t want to fall short or worse, turn someone off.
