Book Review: Obsessed by Rachel Kramer Bussel (ed.)
It’s been a little while since I read an anthology, and I’m glad I decided to pick this one up. Obsessed is edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel and contains some authors well known in the erotic romance genre – Portia Da Costa, Justine Elyot, Charlotte Stein, Kristina Wright, Elizabeth Coldwell and K D Grace to name but a few. The theme, as you’ve probably already guessed, is obsession, and it was very interesting to see how the authors interpreted this theme in so many different ways.
There were non-speaking scenes, bosses and employees, earthquakes, car breakdowns, new neighbours, illicit and risky trysts, and much more. The variety was amazing, as was the writing. There were some stories which stood out for me, and really resonated, but overall, there wasn’t a bad tale nestled between these covers. Sure, I liked some better than others, but that’s always going to be the case in an anthology. I’d definitely recommend this to erotic romance fans – it’s hot!

Book Review: Best Women’s Erotica of the Year Volume 1, edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel
The Best Women’s Erotica series has had an overhaul. There’s a new editor – the inimitable Rachel Kramer Bussel, and a slight tweak in the title format, as well as a change of hands for the publisher itself. Best Women’s Erotica of the Year Volume 1 was sent to me for review, and I was eager to see if the changes were noticeable.
Bussel’s been editing for a long time and obviously knows her stuff, so as I expected, the quality of the stories was high. Granted, there were two or three in there that really didn’t do anything for me and I skipped over them altogether, but to me, that’s the nature of anthologies. You’re unlikely to like every author’s writing style or story topic, and it’s a personal thing. But the vast majority of the stories were excellent, and of course, very hot. My particular favourites were Jade A. Waters’ Ophelia the Second, Heidi Champa’s Drawn by Nic and Tabitha Rayne’s Enter Me. Other recognisable names between these pages are Valerie Alexander, Elizabeth Coldwell, Rose P. Lethe, Rose Caraway, Dorothy Freed and Tiffany Reisz.
I did notice a few errors throughout, which I’d not noticed in Cleis Press anthologies before. A good proofread would have fixed them easily, so that was a shame.
Overall, though, this is a good collection, and a great way to dip in and find some erotica authors you enjoy, so you can go out and see what else they’ve written.

I want your best, hottest, most creative and diverse 1,500-3,500 word erotica stories, written by and starring a wide range of women, from single to coupled, living in big cities and small towns anywhere in the world, of varying sexualities, races, ages (all characters must be 18+) fetishes, jobs, interests and life experiences. As per the series’ history, only submissions by women authors will be considered. Stories in the final book will range from humorous and playful to intense and soulful, and will reflect a similar sexual, racial and age diversity as the stories in Best Women’s Erotica of the Year, Volume 1. Story submissions must be unpublished (never published, in whole or in part, anywhere, online or offline). No scat or incest, although age play will be considered as long as it’s clear in the context of the story that the characters are engaging in roleplay. No poetry.
