Article first published as eBook Review: The Siren by Tiffany Reisz on Blogcritics.
I have been waiting to read Tiffany Reisz’s debut novel for what feels like forever. So when The Siren became available, I grabbed it immediately and dove in. And boy, am I glad I did. This book (the first in a trilogy) tells the story of notorious erotic writer Nora Sutherlin. She has a huge fan club, and each book is more successful than the last. But things change when Nora decides her latest book should be more serious and personal – and changes publishers to reflect this change.
At her new publisher, Nora is paired with Zachary Easton, an incredibly demanding British editor. He’s tough and relentless, and will only work with Nora on one condition – she must rewrite the whole book, following his exact directions, or the deal is off. Far from being put off, Nora rises to the challenge and what follows is six weeks of gruelling writing sessions in which Zachary is drawn deeper into Nora’s personal life, as well as her writing.
But as personalities clash, desire surfaces and feelings are revealed, things suddenly become much more complicated for everyone involved. Will Nora’s naughty book see the light of day, or will her inability to control her libido blow everything wide open? There’s only one way to find out…
The Siren is a delicious read. It’s heavily character driven, and despite the themes of erotica and BDSM involved, it doesn’t contain as much sex as I was expecting. However, the scenes that are there are incredibly erotic and necessary to drive the plot forward. I enjoyed learning more about each of the characters and their motivations, and how their stories progressed. I admit I was surprised by the ending, but it definitely left me wanting more, and looking forward to the release of the next book in this trilogy.
Overall, this is a well-written, engaging novel. Nora is a captivating and very surprising character and I found myself rooting for her throughout. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
