theconfessionsThe Confessions is an intriguing collection from the infamous Original Sinners author, Tiffany Reisz. She’s put together three sets of confessions – as the book’s title suggests. One from Marcus Stearns (aka Soren), one from Eleanor Schreiber (aka Nora), and, most intriguingly, one from the author herself… Tiffany Reisz.

This is a fairly quick read, but is entertaining and amusing nonetheless. A great companion read for those who have devoured the Original Sinners books and are looking for more snippets from their favourite characters. The interview with Ms Reisz is great, too. Well worth picking up if you’re a Reisz/Original Sinners/Soren/Nora fan.

Book Review: Best Women’s Erotica of the Year Volume 1, edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel

Best Women's Erotica of the Year Volume 1The Best Women’s Erotica series has had an overhaul. There’s a new editor – the inimitable Rachel Kramer Bussel, and a slight tweak in the title format, as well as a change of hands for the publisher itself. Best Women’s Erotica of the Year Volume 1 was sent to me for review, and I was eager to see if the changes were noticeable.

Bussel’s been editing for a long time and obviously knows her stuff, so as I expected, the quality of the stories was high. Granted, there were two or three in there that really didn’t do anything for me and I skipped over them altogether, but to me, that’s the nature of anthologies. You’re unlikely to like every author’s writing style or story topic, and it’s a personal thing. But the vast majority of the stories were excellent, and of course, very hot. My particular favourites were Jade A. Waters’ Ophelia the Second, Heidi Champa’s Drawn by Nic and Tabitha Rayne’s Enter Me. Other recognisable names between these pages are Valerie Alexander, Elizabeth Coldwell, Rose P. Lethe, Rose Caraway, Dorothy Freed and Tiffany Reisz.

I did notice a few errors throughout, which I’d not noticed in Cleis Press anthologies before. A good proofread would have fixed them easily, so that was a shame.

Overall, though, this is a good collection, and a great way to dip in and find some erotica authors you enjoy, so you can go out and see what else they’ve written.

eBook Review: The Queen by Tiffany Reisz (@tiffanyreisz)

The QueenAs with each of Ms Reisz’s tales, The Queen is a book with a complex web of characters and plot lines, with past and present heavily intertwined. These are not easy, light reads. But damn, are they good. As I’ve mentioned in previous reviews of books in this series, if you haven’t read any of the books, I’d stop reading the review here because there will inevitably be spoilers – not of this book, but of the ones that went before.

The Queen deals with the aftermath of Nora’s return from her self-imposed exile. She returns to Kingsley, who makes her an offer that will change her life. Can Eleanor Schreiber, submissive of New York City’s most famous sadist, become Mistress Nora, the most feared Dominatrix in the Underground? There’s only one way to find out…

This is another beautifully written tale from Tiffany Reisz. The series is like a jigsaw, really, with each book slotting in more pieces to make the whole picture. With this book, all the pieces are in place and it really makes you appreciate not just The Queen, but all of the other novels, too. It’s a hugely complex world the characters inhabit, and Reisz has told an amazing and very powerful story. Yes, it’s incredibly heavy on the kink, but it’s also laden with emotion, friendships, and all-enduring love. A fantastic ending to a stand-out series. But I suspect this won’t be the last we hear of these characters.

eBook Review: The Virgin by Tiffany Reisz (@tiffanyreisz)

The VirginThe Virgin is the third book in The White Years part of Tiffany Reisz’s Original Sinners series. And, sorry to those of you who have heard this all before, but to those of you that haven’t… if you haven’t read any of the books, I wouldn’t advise continuing to read this review. Although I avoid spoilers wherever possible, there are so many previous books now that I may inadvertently spoil one of those.

Now, on with the review. The Virgin begins in present-day Scotland. Nora, Soren and Kingsley are reminiscing about their various, incredibly colourful, pasts, when a time that none of them have mentioned since it happens comes up. A year when Nora and Kingsley ran away from Soren. Soren, eager now to hear the tale, encourages its telling. And so, in typical Reisz style, we are led into the murky past of the storytellers, hearing in graphic detail what brought about the huge changes, and what happened next. As is mentioned in the blurb (so it’s not a spoiler!), Nora, then Elle, runs to the one place she knows neither Soren nor Kingsley can follow – her mother’s convent.

Unable to stay out of trouble even in a convent, Elle befriends a trainee nun. Together, they discover a sexual awakening and an amount of contentment. But Elle knows she can’t hide forever, and when something comes about to tempt her from her safe retreat, she’s scared, and torn. Is the temptation of fate enough to lure her out of the locked gates? Only one way to find out…

This was another superb read from Reisz. Detailing parts of the story that have only been touched on in the past, we discover yet more about our favourite characters, and how they came to be the people they are now. In terms of kink, this was one of the tamer books in the series, I felt, but it certainly didn’t suffer for it. It was necessary to tell the story how it took place, and there was still plenty of sex, emotion, and, as we’ve come to expect from our Sinners, drama. A very, very enjoyable book with a happy sub plot. As usual, I’m looking forward to more books in the series.

eBook Review: The King by Tiffany Reisz

The KingI’ve read each of the books in the Original Sinners series so far. The King is book six, otherwise known as book two in The White Years. If you haven’t read any of the other books, then please stop reading now as the only way I’ll avoid spoilers is to give a one sentence review 😉

The King, as you’ve probably guessed, is the story of Kingsley Edge’s early(ier) years. More specifically, the years that really shaped him into the kinky, empire-owning, influential man we’ve met in the other books.

When we first meet Kingsley in this book, he’s in a really bad place, existing on a diet of unprotected sex, alcohol and drugs. But when Soren walks back into his life after several years’ absence, everything changes. King is given purpose again, and decides that purpose is to open the ultimate BDSM club­ – a place where people of any sexuality, persuasion or kink can be themselves, and be safe at the same time. However, things don’t run smoothly – the building King sets his heart on has just been purchased by a reverend. And this is no ordinary man of God. Reverend Fuller runs a church that does a great deal more harm than good, which only steels King’s resolve to prize the building from his grasp, and get the man and his poison out of his city. With a wicked team behind him, King fights for his dream – and let’s just say it’s one hell of a ride.

I adored this book. I really enjoyed finding out more about Kingsley, filling in many of the blanks that have arisen over the series so far. He’s an incredibly intriguing character, and this book has actually made him my favourite. A real page-turner from beginning to end, The King is a fantastic addition to this legendary series of books.

eBook Review: The Saint by Tiffany Reisz

The SaintI deliberately left it a day or so after finishing this book to write my review, because I was trying to figure out why I didn’t enjoy it as much as the other titles in The Original Sinners series. I finally came to my conclusion, so here’s my review. If you haven’t read any of the other books, which I know is unlikely, then I wouldn’t advise continuing to read this review, as there are bound to be some spoilers – not from this book, but from previous books. It’s pretty much unavoidable.

The Saint is part of The Original Sinners series by Tiffany Reisz, and also The White Years segment of her books. The majority of the action is set several years in the past, in Nora’s, then known as Eleanor or Ellie, teenage years. We’re introduced to Soren for the very first time, and see through Nora’s eyes exactly what happens between them from their meeting until their relationship gets intimate. We find out in greater detail what Nora goes through, the tests she’s given, the trouble she has with her parents, and so on, until she reaches twenty and Soren finally takes her virginity, and introduces her to the BDSM lifestyle and everything that goes with it.

This is all told as a story narrated by Nora to someone new in her life – so although the majority of the tale is set back in her teenage years, there are some snippets as to what’s happening in Nora’s here and now. And this, I believe, is why I didn’t enjoy The Saint as much as I’ve enjoyed Reisz’s previous books. Yes, of course, the writing is as spectacular as ever, gripping, sexy and erotic, but when I got to the end, I didn’t feel as though I’d learned much more about the characters. The book filled in some gaps, expanded on bits and pieces we previously knew only a little about, but essentially, the overall story wasn’t moved on hugely, with the exception of the segments of Nora’s present.

Don’t get me wrong, I still found this to be a page-turning read, but when I got to the end, I wasn’t left as shocked or satisfied as the previous books. But I’m looking forward to the next one nevertheless. A must-read for Reisz fans.
