In the fourth in a series of interviews with authors from Smut by the Sea Volume 3, I’d like to welcome Zak Jane Keir. Take it away, Zak…
If you could go on holiday to any beach in the world where would you go?
I would quite like to check out some of the California beaches, just because they are so mythologised and I’ve never actually been there. In my head they would be a kind of melange of Jim Steinman soundtrack and Lost-Boys-era Keifer Sutherland on a motorbike at sunset.
What’s your favourite beach memory?
The week I spent at Hedonism II in Jamaica a few years back. To be more specific, there was an incident which involved putting a lilo down to stop sand getting in unwanted places, a moonlit night and the sound of the waves and… Yes, honest. Most of the week was like that. There was misbehaviour in the pool, misbehaviour in the middle of the sea while snorkelling (ever had someone give you a handjob in 20 feet of water? Unnerving but fun) and that’s not to mention all the things that happened in assorted bedrooms.
You’re taking a stroll along the sea front, what are you eating?
Quite probably a pint of prawns. Or maybe even winkles. Some years ago, I remember sitting on the beach at Herne Bay reading a porn mag which I and my then-boyfriend had very daringly bought in the local sex shop, and eating a Cornetto. The boyfriend had gone off to buy some cigarettes, or more Cornettos or something, and a passing man said to me ‘I can tell you’re enjoying that magazine by the way you’re eating your ice cream.’
Who would you like to see in skimpy speedos/ teeny tiny bikini?
No one, actually. I can’t stand budgie-smugglers on men, I prefer baggy surfer shorts or cut-off jeans.
On the beach do you prefer sunbathing or more vigorous activities?
Swimming and paddling. Or poking about in rock pools. To be fair, these days I mostly have my offspring with me when I go to a beach, so building sandcastles is usually involved as well.
Sun or shade?
Shade, definitely. I’m the sort who does a good lobster imitation if not careful. Give me a nice big palm tree or beach umbrella and plenty of sea and I’m happy.
What inspired your story in Smut by the Sea vol 3?
Being by the seaside! I was on holiday last summer and I was supposed to be getting on with a Christmas-themed novella, but I just couldn’t get in the right frame of mind while I was enjoying all the sun-sea-sand-ice-cream. The hotel I was staying in kept playing all this marvellous muzak: lounge versions of 60s classics, one of which was Sealed With A Kiss by Bryan Hyland, and I got this idea about two people being away from their partners for the summer. And then I remembered all the gruesome copyright issues about quoting actual song lyrics, so I made up a song for my characters to be haunted by and the story just sort of evolved from there.
