I was totally intrigued by the unique premise of Keira Andrews’ novel, A Forbidden Rumspringa – an Amish M/M erotic romance. I’m glad to say I wasn’t disappointed.
A Forbidden Rumspringa tells the story of Isaac Byler – an 18 year old man living in the strict Amish settlement of Zebulon, Minnesota. Isaac works on his family’s farm, and knows that soon he’ll have to officially join the church and find a wife, but he’s not looking forward to either of those things. He isn’t quite sure what, or why, but Isaac longs for something else, something different.
When Isaac is given the opportunity to go and work as apprentice for one of their neighbours, David Lantz, Isaac is surprised, and apprehensive. Surprised that his father would encourage him to go and work off the family farm – and apprehensive because being in close proximity to David makes his “different” yearnings stronger. However, without a valid excuse not to work with David, Isaac begins his apprenticeship. Soon, he discovers his feelings for David are returned, and their forbidden attraction grows the more time they spend together.
Before long, they’re compelled to act on their attraction, fighting their guilt and their duty, and trying hard not to think about what would happen if anyone found out. As the secrets and lies spin out of control, are the two men willing to give up everything they know and love for each other?
This was a fascinating read – intriguing, compelling and heart-rending from beginning to end. It was also sweet and erotic all at the same time. I found myself rooting for the boys, hoping they could find a way to solve their problems and find true happiness. I’m not going to say any more and give the game away – but this is a fantastic gay romance and I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the series. Recommended.
