eBook Review: Tap Out by Cat Grant

Tap OutTap Out is the third book in the Bannon’s Gym series from Cat Grant. I read and very much enjoyed the first two, so looked forward to seeing what was in store for the characters next.

While the switching POVs can be a little confusing, this book mainly tells the tale of Tom and Aaron, with lots of crossover between the two as their lives become intertwined. Without giving too much away, the storyline covers Aaron and his continuing struggle with injury and drugs, and Tom as he tries to get past his mother’s suicide and move on with his life. But, naturally, life isn’t simple and it throws plenty of curveballs at the characters, and what makes this such a good read is seeing how they cope and how relationships are made and broken by this.

Overall, this is another gritty read from Cat Grant, with some very emotional parts, as well as hot sex scenes. A good ending to an intriguing series – definitely recommended for those who like their M/M erotic romance laden with angst!

Since I’m on tour with Combustion, which has revisionist-Victorian overtones, I thought I’d take this blog post to talk about the sexually conflicted Victorian period as it really was, not as I reimagined it.

People tend to think of the Victorians as being pretty darn uptight when it comes to sex. And in a way, they’d be right: the same rules and regulations that governed all aspects of Victorian life didn’t exclude sexuality. Men prided themselves on controlling their baser instincts, and women were considered not to have many sexual feelings at all!

At the same time, though, the Victorian era was a time of rampant prostitution. Regulating sexuality didn’t really control it; instead, those regulations pushed sexuality underground. Women’s sexuality was still considered abnormal, however. Any aberrant behavior by a woman was considered a sign of hysteria, pent-up sexual frustration, to be “cured” by a doctor who would bring a woman to orgasm by hand in his office.

The problem was that my fantasy fiction has always had elements of romance and erotica to it. Traditionally, it’s been hard to find an audience that likes both together—fantasy readers may find erotic scenes, romance, and non-binary genders distracting from the plot, and erotica readers generally aren’t all that turned on by court intrigue and complex world building—but thanks to the popularity of writers like Jacqueline Carey and Storm Constantine, adventurous readers are more common these days.

eBook Review: Takedown (Bannon’s Gym Book 2) by Cat Grant

TakedownTakedown is book two in Cat Grant’s popular Bannon’s Gym series. I read and enjoyed book one, Black Dog, and already have the third title lined up on my Kindle. This is a great series for fans of M/M, especially if they like plenty of angst, real life drama and an overdose of testosterone.

This book takes place a couple of years after the events of book one. Tom Delaney is back in Lincoln Beach to settle some family business. Almost immediately, the bad memories begin to haunt him, and he can’t wait to get back out of town. But some of his good memories, and the people that helped him make them, encourage him to stick around.

But, as always, life is never simple, and when Tom ends up back in bed with his ex, an already complicated situation becomes much, much worse. Will Tom cut and run, or is he strong enough to overcome his past in order to secure his future?

Packed full of fighting – both in and out of the ring – family feuds, troublesome ex-lovers and lots more, this is another edge-of-your-seat read from Cat Grant. Add in a healthy dollop of super hot sex and you have yourself a real page turner. I’m looking forward to what’s next.
